This Week in Liberal and Progressive Media
Obama has said he believes domestic oil production to be an important part of America’s approach to energy security, when done “responsibly.” Administration officials said the accident would halt new drilling under Obama’s proposal last month to open up parts of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, for new oil and gas leases. “No additional drilling has been authorized and none will until we find out what happened here and whether there was something unique and preventable,” White House senior adviser David Axelrod told Good Morning America. It’s unclear how long that moratorium may last, but liberal media outlets, conservationists, and others would like the administration to consider forever blocking further drilling.
The front page of CommonDreams.org reads: “The Gulf Spill Should Take ‘Offshore Drilling off the Table for Good,’” quoting Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune. “This disaster changes everything. This tragedy should be a wake-up call. It's time to take offshore drilling off the table for good.”
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow also interviewed Brune, who described offshore drilling as “dirty, deadly, and dangerous,” prompting a discussion with Maddow about what regulations related to cleanup are actually in place for these giant drilling operations. Maddow asked whether it would naive to suggest that oil companies “shouldn’t be approved to drill deeper than they know how to clean up.” The two also discussed what Brune called the need for “the separation of oil and state.”
Kevin Jones, blogging for Mother Jones, shares an e-mail he sent a friend, wondering when Rush Limbaugh would blame Obama for the BP explosion. “Honest to God, I didn't know he'd said this a few hours earlier” and discusses how Limbaugh suggests “So, since they're sending SWAT teams down there, folks, since they're sending SWAT teams to inspect the other rigs, what better way to head off more oil drilling, nuclear plants, than by blowing up a rig? I'm just noting the timing here.”
That prompted a response from one reader: “We endured months and months of Democrats and liberals 'blaming' Katrina on Bush, even though Bush doesn't control the weather. Even though state authorities were horrible, worse than the federal government, in regards to their pre-storm and post-storm actions and reactions. Yet now, those same people, are going to bitch and raise hell that conservatives are going to do the same thing to Obama. Turnabout is fair play. Obama should own this just like Bush 'owned' Katrina.”
Let the finger-pointing and mudslinging begin.
