Legion Season 1 was … complicated. The second season looks to be as challenging to follow if a new trailer is any indication. The first official footage from Legion Season 2 sets the tone by not addressing any of last year's cliffhangers. It starts a brand new story with David Haller trapped inside some sort of orb, first introduced in a post-credits scene from Legion Season 1.
The trailer highly suggests Season 2 starts after David Haller returns from wherever the orb took him, signifying a time jump. "After you left, we joined Division 3 and started working together to fight our real enemy," Ptonomy Wallace (Jeremie Harris) says in the trailer. That real enemy is, of course, Shadow King.

This new footage also gives our first look at Shadow King in Navid Negrahban's human form. Last season, he telepathically taunted David through his best friend Lenny, and it didn't end well for Aubrey Plaza's character. Now the villain looks less demonic and more human. The trailer reveals Shadow King continued to infect people after David left in the orb, and Division 3 and Summerland have yet to figure out how he does it. In one scene, we see David trying to cure Ptonomy Wallace. Wallace is a 'memory artist' who helps mutants learn the extent of their powers, so it makes sense Shadow King would eliminate him as a resource to David.
We also get a hint at Shadow King's overall plan, as he later taunts David regarding his love interest, Syd. "She lives in a future you are going to destroy. And when you do, she will cease to exist," Shadow King says. It's quite possible Shadow King is trying to push David to his limits so he'll exert all his power and endanger this future, all feeding into his overall plan.

Without David around to fight the demonic parasite (who was defeated in a battle with David's father and has taken over David's mind for revenge), the Summerland mutants had no choice but to team up with the government organization who was once hunting them. If this all seems fishy, it's because it is. Executive Producer Noah Hawley teased twists and a change of perspective for Season 2.
"I was interested this year in looking at a mass psychology. Mental illness can also be cultural in a way, so those issues were interesting to me," Hawley said during the TCA Winter tour. "We're also exploring with Dan [Stevens], he's on a journey here in which in the language of this world, you have heroes and villains. It's not determined yet where he's going to end up. A lot of that's going to have to do with what's holding him on the good path, this love story with Rachel [Keller] and his experience with Farouk."

It sounds like David may be the sane man in the insane world this time around, so keep that in mind heading into the Season 2 premiere on April 3 on FX.
