Las Vegas Shooting Map: Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and Surrounding Hotels Lift Lockdowns After Attack

Multiple hotels were placed on lockdown after a mass shooting on Sunday night during an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas, forcing hotel residents and club partygoers to remain indoors.

The shooter was in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, which on Monday morning issued a statement offering “thoughts & prayers” following a shooting that left at least 58 people dead and more than 400 injured. The resort was among several that were cooperating with law enforcement’s request to be on lockdown, asking guests to stay in their rooms and on the premises. Those who had been partying at the clubs inside hotels were held inside the venues.

Shortly after 8 a.m. local time, most of the lockdowns were lifted.

The Tropicana Las Vegas hotel, which is about a mile away from the resort where the shooter opened fire, was among those placed on lockdown, along with several entities of MGM Resort International—all of which are located within walking distance of the Mandalay—including ARIA, Bellagio, Circus Circus, Delano, Excalibur, Luxor, MGM Grand, The Signature at MGM Grand, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York and Vdara Hotel & Spa.

Authorities said 64-year-old shooter Stephen Paddock launched the attack from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. Las Vegas police officers discovered Paddock dead in his room. Police also found a number of rifles. Paddock checked into the hotel last week, according to the Associated Press.

Las Vegas Sherrif Joe Lombardo said that the FBI was headed to the scene of the shooting and would be working on the investigation going forward.

Situated near the south end of the famed Las Vegas Strip, Mandalay Bay is surrounded by hotels, casinos, restaurants and bars on Las Vegas Boulevard. The resort is a two-mile drive from the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

The last time shots were fired on the Las Vegas Strip was in August. Police arrested a man near the Bellagio fountains after he opened fire on Las Vegas Boulevard. No injuries were reported in that shooting.
