Newsmakers: Slash, Spice Girls, Nick Lachey

Q & A: Slash
Ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash is back with a new album by his group Velvet Revolver. He spoke to NEWSWEEK's Lorraine Ali.

Do you still get asked about what's happening with Guns N' Roses?
I get that a lot, like I'm supposed to have some finger on the pulse of what's going on with Guns N' Roses when I haven't had that for a good 10 years.

Do people expect you to act a certain way?
From time to time. People have some sort of mental fantasy—like expecting me to be passed out in my soup or walking around playing air guitar. I'm supposed to be really out of it and a rock-star a--hole.

Your new record with Velvet Revolver got pushed back. Did that bring back bad memories of the never-released "Chinese Democracy"?
The fact that it's a couple months late and gets comparisons to the 10-years-late of the Guns N' Roses album is ridiculous. People always try and stir up s--t.

What's next for you?
I'm working on Guitar Hero III. They're animating me.

What's Guitar Hero?
It's an interactive videogame where you have a plastic guitar with buttons on the front that correspond with a visual on the screen and you try and play along with all these songs. It's a huge craze with kids worldwide.

I hear screaming on the phone. You have kids?
They're wonderful, but they're a lot like we are. Very high-energy stuff going on around here. A 3- and 5-year-old.

Do they have your hair?
Yes, one does.

Is your hair still long?
I look pretty much the same, apparently. I see people I haven't seen since I was 6 and they say I look the same. I just added a guitar and cigarette and top hat.

Why the hat?
I didn't know the top hat was gonna stick. It was just great to hide behind when I had to get up onstage. I can see you, you can't see me.

Sex and Spice: The Girls Are Back!
Talk about girl power. Posh Spice, Samantha, Sporty Spice, Miranda, Ginger Spice, Carrie, Baby Spice, Charlotte and Scary Spice are all getting back together. OK, not all together, but it's close enough. Last week HBO announced that the long-delayed "Sex and the City" movie will finally begin filming this fall. The Spice Girls also confirmed they'll rock again with a global tour, and fans downloaded their old song "Stop" as a sign of support. All that's missing from the '90s reunion? The Golden Girls. Now, that would make for a rocking good time.

Lachey in LaBuff
Just when you thought that Nick Lachey couldn't get more overexposed, along comes the kind of attention that even he admits is too much. Lachey and his girlfriend, Vanessa Minnillo, were in Mexico this month when a paparazzo caught them in a hot tub, and when we say hot, we mean that what they were doing to each other was so hot, we can't print the photos. Of course, they soon turned up online, only to vanish at his lawyer's "request." But why? Nick's not ashamed. "Where's the scandal?" he told OK magazine. "I was in Mexico with my girlfriend on a private vacation. It's not like I was caught with a Mexican hooker." Perish the thought.
