Since the Academy Awards began in 1929, there is only one actor who has been nominated 21 times: Meryl Streep. Katherine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson come in second place for being most nominated, with 12 nods.

2. Katherine Hepburn was nominated 12 times and won four times. She received an award for best actress for Morning Glory (1933), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) The Lion in Winter (1968) and On Golden Pond (1981).

3. Jack Nicholson has received 12 nominations and was honored with an Oscar three times. He won best actor for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and As Good as It Gets (1997). He took home the best supporting actor award for Terms of Endearment (1983).

4. Bette Davis was nominated ten times. She won best actress twice, once for Dangerous (1935) and once for Jezebel (1938).

5. Spencer Tracy earned nine nominations. He took home the best actor award twice, one for Captains Courageous (1937) and one for Boys Town (1938).

6. Marlon Brando earned eight nominations. He took home the best actor award for On the Waterfront (1954) and The Godfather (1972).

7. Jack Lemmon received eight nominations. He won two of those times. He took home the best actor Oscar for Save the Tiger (1973) and won best supporting actor for Mister Roberts. (1955).

8. Denzel Washington has earned eight Oscar nominations. Two of those times he won, once for best actor for Training Day (2001) and once for best supporting actor for Glory (1989).

9. Ingrid Bergman was nominated for an Oscar seven times. She won three times, receiving a best actress award for Gaslight (1944) and Anastasia (1956) and a best supporting actress for Oscar for Murder on the Orient Express (1974).

10. Cate Blanchett has been nominated seven times for an Oscar and won an award two of those times. She received the best actress award for Blue Jasmine (2013) and the best supporting actress award for The Aviator (2004).

11. Robert De Niro has earned seven Oscar nominations. He won the Academy Award twice, taking home the best actor award for Raging Bull (1980) and best supporting actor for The Godfather Part II (1974).

12. Jane Fonda was nominated seven times. She won best actress for Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978).
