Splatoon 2 got some major updates during the March 8 Nintendo Direct, including a rundown of what’s coming in the version 3.0 update as well as a brand new story expansion.
Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion is the first paid DLC for the Nintendo Switch game. The story expansion releases this summer for $19.99 It adds a new single-player mode that lets players control an Octoling named Agent 8 who suffers from amnesia. There will be 80 missions, as well as a new story that sheds light on some beloved characters. If you thought you knew everything about Inkopolis or its inhabitants you’re wrong.
When players complete the new single-player mode, it unlocks the option to play as an Octoling in multiplayer matches. Splatoon 2 owners who pre-purchase the expansion can unlock exclusive Octo-themed gear to use in battle right now.
Rumors of playable Octolings date back to August 2017 when a dataminer found code that replaced gender with species SquidGirl, SquidBoy and Oct. This led to many Splatoon 2 anticipating today’s announcement that Octolings becomeplayable in Splatoon 2 multiplayer.
Version 3.0, a free update dropping this Spring, gives players access to 100 new pieces of gear and three new stages: Piranha Pit, Camp Triggerfish and Wahoo World. A new rank will also be unlocked for players who really want to partake in some extreme battles. Rank X will be higher than S+ but details on how to achieve that rank are being kept secret for now.
Splatoon 2 is available now for Nintendo Switch.
