Arsene Wenger is contemplating whether to send Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker out on loan during the January transfer window, according to reports.
Mertesacker’s current deal at the Emirates Stadium expires at the end of the season, and Wenger wants to judge him on his first-team action.
The German center-back has been unable to feature frequently for the Gunners this season, with Wenger preferring Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny in the heart of defense.
According to The Times, the French manager is considering loaning Mertesacker to another club so he can assess his standard before offering another contract.
Arsenal currently sits fourth in the Premier League table, eight points behind leader Chelsea, and faces a trip to struggling Swansea City on Saturday.
The January transfer window closes on the last day of the month.
