Chelsea is believed to have been in contact with Real Madrid about a potential move for Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez.

The 24-year-old has struggled to impress under the management of both Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu since his move from Monaco in 2014.

But Antonio Conte, the incoming Chelsea manager, could be on the verge of taking the attacking midfielder to west London, according to Spanish publication El Confidencial.

Conte, who is currently on duty as manager of Italy at Euro 2016, is yet to make a major signing at Stamford Bridge with six weeks until the start of the new Premier League season.

Rodriguez made his multi-million-pound move from Ligue 1 to Spain after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he won the golden boot.

But after two seasons in La Liga, where he has scored 20 goals, Rodriguez may be on his way to the Premier League.

Real Madrid will still be looking to recoup a substantial chunk of the £60 million ($80 million) fee paid for him two years ago.
