Luke Shaw has responded to José Mourinho’s criticism of him by insisting he will “fight to the last” to save his Manchester United career.

Following Shaw’s omission from the United squad for Saturday’s 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion, Mourinho said the England left-back was “way behind” his other options.

Shaw reportedly held clear-the-air talks with Mourinho on Monday and was named in the squad for Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Everton, coming on as a substitute.

Following the match, Shaw told reporters: “The stuff that has been going on is hard for me to take because deep down that is not me as a person.”

The 21-year-old insisted he was not giving up on his career at Manchester United and would be responding to Mourinho’s comments.

“I am keeping my head up and I am not going to give up,” he said, as quoted by The Times. “I love this club and I will give everything to be here. I am working harder than ever. I am going through a phase where everything sort of is going against me, but I want this so badly, I want to prove everyone wrong.

“Like José said, he wants to see me fighting. I will fight to the last second because I want to be here for the club. I want to play for the manager and I want to help this team get back to the top.”

United travels to the Stadium of Light on Saturday to take on David Moyes’ Sunderland side that is bottom of the Premier League table.
