The World Cup will be expanded to 48 nations from 2026, FIFA has announced.
The current format, with 32 teams and groups of four nations, will be disbanded and changed to 16 groups of three teams.
FIFA voted for the decision at a meeting in Zurich on Tuesday. The number of matches at the tournament will rise from 64 to 80.
Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, has previously said the expansion would make the World Cup “more inclusive” and will help develop football “all over the world.”
