Stephen Colbert Jokes Trump Has Daddy Issues: 'His Father Did Not Love Him Enough, Now We're Paying the Price'

Wednesday was another tumultuous day in the White House, following news that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson once allegedly called President Donald Trump a “moron.”

And on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert had a bone to pick with Tillerson: “Hold on there, Rex. Hold on there, Tillerson. Nobody calls our president a moron...except me,” the comedian joked. “And other world leaders. And ultimately history,” he quickly added to much laughter from the audience.

Of course, Trump has had a busy week. On Tuesday, he visited Puerto Rico, the U.S. territory recently ravaged by Hurricane Maria, to show support to the three million Americans affected—many of whom are without power or clean drinking water. And on Wednesday, the president also visited Las Vegas, where a gunman shot dead 58 concertgoers attending a country music festival in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

And so with much important work to be done, “naturally, the president kept his eye on the ball and let this Tillerson story pass,” Colbert deadpanned on Wednesday’s The Late Show.

“I’m just kidding,” the late-night host said, before showing Trump’s tweets attacking “fake news” NBC for running the Tillerson story.

Colbert suggested that Trump’s thin-skinned response to the NBC report may be rooted in deep-seated daddy issues.

“What’s lovely is that in times of trouble, Donald Trump always is there...for himself,” he said sarcastically. “‘Thoughts and prayers to the black hole in my heart,’” Colbert said, mocking Trump’s voice, “‘that will never be filled and is the shape of my daddy.’”

Colbert explained to the audience: “The theory being that his father did not love him when he was younger and we’re paying the price.”

At a press conference Wednesday, Tillerson denied reports he wanted to quit his White House role. But when asked if he did, in fact, call Trump a “moron,” he sheepishly said: “I’m not going to deal with petty stuff like that…”

Colbert’s evaluation? “Yeah, he totally said it.”

But—and this is new even for Colbert—the late-night star actually agreed with Trump that NBC owes America an apology.

“NBC News does owe us an apology,” he said. “Because apparently Tillerson didn’t call our president a ‘moron’—he called him a ‘******* moron.’”
