Suspected Panama City Shooter Heard on Camera During Live News Broadcast

UPDATE: 4:55 p.m. ET— The Bay County Sheriff's Office confirmed that "multiple shots" were fired when detectives arrived on the scene. It said that the suspect, 49-year-old Kevin Robert Hulroyd, is wanted in connection to a homicide investigation in Walton County. 

The bomb squad attempted to breach the front door, but Hulroyd had barricaded it from the inside, the sheriff's office said in a Facebook update. "The incident is ongoing," it said. 

An EMS worker was grazed by a bullet, the sheriff's office confirmed.

UPDATE: 4:29 p.m. ET— The Bay County Sheriff's Office said officers, with the help of a bomb squad, breached the front door where the suspected active shooter is believed to be barricaded.

According to WRBL, the Bay County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect as Kevin Robert Hulroyd.

Deputies responded to reports of shots fired around 12:45 p.m. near Briarwood Apartments at 23rd Street and Beck Avenue in Panama City, a sheriff's office spokesperson told the news station. The spokesperson said that deputies exchanged fire with the suspect.

Panama City Police believe the shooting suspect remains barricaded in an apartment near Beck Avenue and 23rd Street. Panama City officials said police are still trying to make contact with the suspect. “This is still an active situation and the public is urged to avoid the area," officials said in a Facebook post

WMBB reported that shots could be heard during the live broadcast of the ongoing situation.

At least one person was wounded with a minor injury and was taken to a local hospital, city spokeswoman Caitlin Lawrence told CNN.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a “suspicious death on White Heron Drive in Santa Rosa Beach” is connected to the active situation in Panama City. Officials said the victim’s body was found around 10 a.m., WRBL reported.

The victim was identified as 30-year-old Clinton Street by the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

 



 

 

Several agencies are responding to the incident, including Panama City Police, Panama City Beach Police, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife and Florida Highway Patrol.

St. Andrews School on Beck Street and Lucile Moore Elementary School on Michigan Avenue were placed on lockdown as a precaution. WRBL reported that Covenant School on Frankfurt Avenue was also placed on lockdown.
