Ted Cruz Blames Porn Tweet on 'Staffing Issues,' Wonders Whether He Should Have Used Porn to Trend in Primaries

Senator Ted Cruz now says that "staffing issues" were to blame for a Monday night post on his official Twitter account that suggested he was a fan of hardcore porn.

The former presidential hopeful, whose account had "liked" an explicit video clip from @SexuallPosts, said the incident was an accident and not motivated by malice.

"There are a number of people on the team that have access to the account and it appears that someone inadvertently hit the 'like' button," Cruz told the Associated Press, adding: “It was a staffing issue, and it was inadvertent. It was a mistake; it was not a deliberate action.”

"We’re dealing with it internally, but it was a mistake, it was not malicious conduct," he added, joking the Twitter mistake could have aided his presidential bid back in 2016.

“I will say that if I had known that this would trend so quickly, perhaps we should have posted something like this back during the Indiana primary," he said.

Following the mishap, Cruz’s communications team deleted the tweet. But the moralistic Republican from Texas remained an internet meme most of the day Monday.

“Wow, and here I thought the only thing @tedcruz could get off to was stealing healthcare from poor people. Color me shocked,” tweeted former Florida Representative Alan Grayson.

And Cruz's former Princeton roommate also chimed in.

“Now imagine Ted Cruz is doing this four feet below you in the bottom bunk bed,” Hollywood writer Craig Mazin tweeted. “Yes, my misery very much appreciates your company.”

One reason that so many people were eager to mock Cruz may be due to his self-appointed role as a moral arbiter. Cruz has frequently railed against gay marriage, has maligned "New York values," and has promised to defend Western civilization.
