What is Toast the Dog’s Cause of Death? Canine Instagram Star Dies

Fashion publicist Katie Sturino had sad news to announce on Friday: her beloved dog Toast died. The canine was one of the first pets to become a celebrity on Instagram, attracting more than 377,000 followers.

Toast was a King Charles who Sturino saved from a puppy mill. She didn’t have any teeth, making her perpetually tongue stick out. Sturino, and much of the internet, fell in love with Toast.

The publicist did not immediately reveal Toast's the cause of death.

“Heaven has a new star tonight,” Sturino wrote in the post. “We’re heartbroken to share the news that Toast has passed. This puppy mill rescue had an exceptional life. She wrote a book, had a televised wedding, appears on billboards across the country promoting rescue and modeled for an international eyewear campaign. But above all, she was a best friend, a world champion little spoon.”

Heaven has a new star tonight. We’re heartbroken to share the news that Toast has passed. This puppymill rescue had an exceptional life. She wrote a book, had a televised wedding, appears on billboards across the country promoting rescue and modeled for an international eyewear campaign. But above all, she was a best friend, a world champion little spoon...but she was far from being an angel. Toast was often a little devil. Grabbing rolls of toilet paper off and dragging them into the living room for a snack. Peeing whenever/wherever she wanted to. Pretending not to be able to jump on the couch because she just wanted a ride. And snoring like a 400lb trucker. In the next few weeks we will be doing tributes for her. If Toast has inspired you or taught you about rescue please consider donating to the link in the bio. 100% off the donations will go to her three favorite charities. If you would like to show your love for Toast and the tongue that will never be forgotten, please post a photo using #ToastMeetsHeaven so we can see. Toast loved meeting fans at meet ups and on the streets. She knew she was loved and adored by people around the globe and we are so grateful to have known her. Our hearts will eventually heal knowing that she will live on forever in people’s hearts ❤️ her account will live on as a place to watch her siblings @muppetsrevenge and @underpantsthedog as well as to support rescue efforts near and dear to Toast’s heart #toastmeetsheaven

Sturino stayed true to Toast’s character, writing about her mischievous ways. “Toast was often a little devil. Grabbing rolls of toilet paper off and dragging them into the living room for a snack. Peeing whenever/wherever she wanted to,” the post said. “Pretending not to be able to jump on the couch because she just wanted a ride. And snoring like a 400lb trucker.”

In Toast’s memory, Sturino asked followers to post their favorite pictures of the famous canine.

“If you would like to show your love for Toast and the tongue that will never be forgotten, please post a photo using #ToastMeetsHeaven so we can see. Toast loved meeting fans at meet ups and on the streets,” the blogger wrote. “She knew she was loved and adored by people around the globe and we are so grateful to have known her.”

Sturino, who runs the website The 12ish, set up a fundraiser for her beloved pet called, “Toast Meets Heaven.”

“To continue the work that Toast (@ToastMeetsWorld) did to raise awareness about puppy mills and to promote the message of adoption (#adoptdontshop), please consider donating, 100 percent of the donations will go to these three charities,” the blogger wrote.

The money will be bequeathed to Humane Society US Humane Generation, National Mill Dog Rescue and True Rescue. The fundraiser had a goal of $378,000. At the time this story was written, the page raised more than $3,000 from 32 supporters.

On her personal Instagram page, Sturino mourned Toast, saying the canine was responsible for her fashion career. “Toast was not just a pet to me, she was an inspiration. I found myself through that journey and I have never felt more at peace with myself,” she wrote. “I’m devastated but I am so grateful for this toothless angel.”
