Transfer Window News: Manchester United Close in on Alex Sandro, Wayne Rooney Update

With the opening of the transfer window creeping closer, the Premier League’s top teams are getting read to spend big once more.

Last summer saw a record spend in English football, with teams like Manchester City and Manchester United outspending the rest, flexing their financial muscles.

Pep Guardiola has suggested City will be more thrifty in the coming months, with only a couple of new additions needed at the Etihad.

But Manchester United and Arsenal are both a long way behind the champions of England, and they will turn to the market to change that.

According to Football Italia, Manchester United are close to confirming a £43.7 million ($59.1 million) deal to sign Alex Sandro from Juventus. The left-back was a target for Chelsea, but now looks set to replace Matteo Darmian at Old Trafford.

Manchester United could also add another defender this summer. According to the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho’s team want to sign Atletico Madrid’s Croatian defender Sime Vrsaljko, and he is valued at around £30 million.

One player who may not be leaving the Premier League is Wayne Rooney. According to The Sun, the former United striker will now speak to the new Everton boss before making his decision, after Sam Allardyce was sacked by the club on Wednesday. Rooney, 32, was set to join DC United in MLS.

Arsenal are looking to strengthen their defense. According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners are looking at Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, with the 29-year-old Greek expected to cost around £17.5 million. But they will also try and beat Manchester City to the signing of West Brom defender Jonny Evans at a cost of just £3 million, according to the Daily Mirror.

And finally, the exodus from relegated Stoke City looks set to begin as Kevin Wimmer, the 25-year-old defender signed from Tottenham a year ago, enters talks with a new club. According to the Daily Mail, he is in discussions with Hannover about a move to Germany.
