'The 100' Series Finale: Why Is the Show Ending After Season 7?

The 100 has been a massive cult hit over its seven seasons on The CW, but has now come to an end. The channel aired the series finale (Season 7, Episode 16) on Wednesday, October 1 after the show was canceled back in August 2019.

In interviews, The 100 creator Jason Rothenberg has revealed exactly why the time was right to end the show after Season 7. He told Collider in May 2020: "This was where it needed to end. I don't know if the studio and network would have let us continue into Season 8. I assume they would have...but we were ready.

"It's a long time to be telling the story of one group of characters...We also didn't want to overstay our welcome and be a show that was making episodes into Season 10 and 12, and beyond, just to do it.

"So, it was a decision that we made, and you often don't get to write your own ending and when you're gonna end. That was another amazingly generous thing that the studio and network allowed."

With #The100 Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last. We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!

Rothenberg first announced the show was ending on Twitter in August 2019, when the showrunner wrote: "With #The100 Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last. We are eternally grateful to WB [Warner Bros.] & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!"

After he tweeted this, he went into more detail in a TVLine interview. "I didn't go rogue. I was asked to tweet that by the network. It was well-timed to [network president Mark Pedowitz's] appearance on stage at TCA [Television Critics Association]. We've actually been asking for this to be the last season for a while, because we feel like it's time to get out while the getting's good.

"We want to leave [the fans] wanting more. We don't want to overstay our welcome. All the cliches. But [The CW wasn't] ready to commit to that until late last week when I got a call from Mark. He's been great the whole time about respecting showrunners. He really does give us enough rope to hang ourselves with, so we will now attempt to not do that."

Of course, ending the show when they did is also fitting in another way—Season 7, Episode 16 is the 100th episode, making the title The 100 refer not just to the surviving earthlings at the start of the series but to the show itself.

The 100 Seasons 1 to 6 are streaming now on Netflix; the five most recent episodes including the season finale are streaming now on The CW app and website.
