An 11-year-old girl in Chicago was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being shot in the face at a gas station. A 19-year-old man, who was also shot during the incident, was reported to be in serious-to-critical condition, according to Chicago fire officials.
Ny-Andrea Dyer was in the backseat of a gray Lincoln MKS SUV at a gas station near 127th Street and Wentworth Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago's south side when the shooting took place around 11 p.m. local time on Monday, according to police.
The 19-year-old was leaving the store of the gas station when he was shot in the groin area. The teenager returned fire but did not manage to shoot anyone, while the suspect shot Dyer in the face.
The girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital and her family was reported to be asking for prayers as she fights for her life, according to Chicago's WGN-TV.
The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a suburb of Chicago.
Police confirmed a weapon was found in the 12600 block of South Wentworth Avenue, about a block away from where the shooting took place.
The motive behind the shooting is unknown and no one has been taken into custody, as of early Tuesday, ABC Chicago reported.
The girl does not appear to have been the intended target, according to police. The city's Area Two detectives are investigating the incident.
There is no relation between Dyer and the 19-year-old man, WGN-TV reported.
