1950s Ford Racing History Inspires New 2022 Ford GT Supercar

Ford premiered an ultra-rare (and sold out) special edition of its range-topping supercar at the 2022 New York International Auto Show. The 2022 Ford GT Holman Moody Heritage Edition, featuring Holman Moody Gold paint, made its debut alongside a matching 1966 GT40 MKII.

Holman Moody was a race team spawned in the '50s, created by two members of Ford factory race team that lost their jobs when the American Manufacturers' Association banned the Blue Oval's official participation in motorsport.

It was one of the first companies to build stock car chassis for racing, after parts man and mechanic John Holman teamed up with driver Ralph Moody and bought the shop they were just fired from. In 1965 the company was tasked with building one of the Ford's GT40 race cars, completing part of the company's 1-2-3 sweep at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.

The Ford GT returned in 2017 and has since seen at least one special edition per year leaning on its racing history.

"Of all the Ford GT Heritage Edition liveries we've done, the Holman Moody Heritage Edition's can't-miss signature gold and red theme is an epic tribute to our 1966 Le Mans finish," said Mike Severson, Ford GT program manager in a press release. "Inspired by one of the most well-known Ford GT40 race cars, this latest Ford GT honors the Holman Moody race team's knowhow and ability to out-innovate global competitors."

In 2017 and 2018 Ford built Heritage Editions honoring Le Mans winners in '66 and '67. The next two years it painted its Heritage Editions in the famous light blue and orange Gulf Oil racing colors. And Ford has made three more in 2021 and 2022 before this one, all of which with less than 50 examples.

The gold and red vehicles feature Oxford White circles with No. 5 stamped on the door, matching the '66 race car. It also has exposed carbon fiber on the 20-inch wheels, front splitter, side sills, mirrors, engine louvres and rear diffuser.

The carbon fiber trim extends to the cabin on the door sills, console and vents. Alcantra covers the lightweight carbon fiber seats with debossed GT logos. The pillars are Alcantara while the dash gets a mix with leather. Gold appliques bring a little brightness into a generally dark cabin.

This Ford GT Holman Moody Heritage Edition, like most of the GT specials, is an appearance package. All 2022 Ford GTs comes standard with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 660 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. That's still sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and only the rear wheels. It does have an adjustable suspension meaning it is surprisingly livable on normal roads.

First deliveries will take place this spring to "approved Ford GT customers," says Ford.
