On January 6, facing little resistance from law enforcement, radical followers of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol and disrupted a joint session of Congress to certify the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. A U.S. Capitol police officer died from injuries sustained in the attack; four others died as well. The crowd descended on the Capitol, urged on by Trump and other speakers, including his son Donald Trump Jr. and Rudy Guiliani, the president's lawyer, who told the Trump crowd: "Let's have a trial by combat." Trump and his supporters, estimated in the thousands, had gathered to dispute the results of the November 3 election, which they claim, without evidence, was stolen. Here is the day in pictures.
