Subaru's most popular model, the Forester, has gotten a few updates for the 2022 model year, including the introduction of a new, trail-ready version of the compact SUV.

The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness takes its inspiration from the Subaru Outback Wilderness that debuted late last year. It builds on the Forester Premium offering mechanical, design, and functionality enhancements.

Subaru's engineers have bumped up the Wilderness's ground clearance to 9.2 inches from 8.7 with longer cool springs and shock absorbers. The model was then tuned to maintain the SUV's ride height and handling performance.

The rig rides on Yokohama Geolander all-terrain tires wrapped around 17-inch alloy wheels finished in a matte black color. The tires are embossed with raised white letters. A standard full-size tire, a feature traditionally lacking in modern SUVs, is stored under the cargo area.

Forester Wilderness has different fascia than the traditional Forester. A hexagonal front grille leads the way and pairs with larger wheel arch cladding, a front skid plate, hexagonal LED fog lights and a matte black anti-glare hood decal.

Its interior features water resistant StarTex seating surfaces. A ladder roof rack features a dynamic load capacity of 220 pounds and can support up to 800 pounds when parked.

Buyers can choose to add an $1,850 option package to the system that includes an 8.0-inch infotainment touch screen, navigation, a Harman Kardon sound system and a power liftgate.

The Forester Wilderness has a starting MSRP of $32,820.

Subaru has changed up the rest of the Forester lineup at mid-generation to include fresh fascia, a new grille, headlights and fog light covers. The SUV's roof rails have been redesigned and strengthened. Automatic Emergency Steering, which works in conjunction with pre-collision braking to help avoid collisions at speeds less than 50 mph, is now available.

Subaru has added two utility hoods to the rear cargo area and a brighter LED dome light has been installed as standard equipment.

Pricing for the 2022 Forester starts at $25,195.

The 2022 Forester will be offered in six trim levels when it arrives at Subaru retailers in October: Base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited and Touring.
