Toyota is taking a new level of performance to the track and the streets. Two new sports car models made their debut in Texas this week, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 and the 2022 Toyota Supra A91-CF.

2022 Toyota GR 86

The 2022 Toyota GR 86 is a next-generation design building off the platform that the Japanese automaker co-designed with Subaru, which uses the architecture for its BRZ coupe.

It features styling that is similar to the current Toyota 86 but with modern flare like standard LED headlights, and new exterior color options that help it stand out in a crowd. The model was initially shown wearing a Track bRed paint job.

The "GR" in GR 86 stands for Toyota Gazoo Racing, a precision-focusing engineering division within Toyota that is responsible for honing the driving dynamics of Toyota's performance vehicles.

Customers in the U.S. will be able to get a GR 86 in base or GR 86 Premium trim level. Both models are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, a boost of 23 horsepower and 28 pound-feet of torque from the previous version. Buyers have their choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

All that power moves the lightweight GR 86 getting it from zero to 60 mph in as little as 6.1 seconds, which doesn't make it particularly zippy - it is faster than the traditional Toyota RAV4 but slower than the RAV4 Prime.

The interior is as sporty as the exterior with appointments befitting the car's positioning in the Toyota lineup. Alcantara upholstery matches with leather accents, leather-trimmed driver touch points, and silver-colored trim pieces throughout the cabin.

The new GR 86 has a three-mode digital display for Normal, Sport, and Track driving modes, a 7-inch driver information screen, a six-speaker audio system, and an 8-inch infotainment touch screen as standard. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Connected Services are available on the GR 86 Premium.

Only models with an automatic transmission get a suite of standard safety technology that mimics Subaru's EyeSight active safety system. The list includes pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure warning, sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and high-beam assist.

Every new GR 86 purchased comes with a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association.

Pricing for the model has not yet been announced. It will go on sale later this year.

2022 Toyota Supra A91-CF

The 2022 Toyota Supra A91-CF builds on the body styling and track-tuned drive dynamics of the fifth-generation Supra. The limited-edition model is exclusive to North America and takes the "CF" in its name from the array of carbon fiber elements found throughout its interior and exterior.

Toyota has attached a carbon fiber front splitter, side rockers, and duckbill spoiler to the traditional Supra body. It rides on 19-inch matte back wheels and is bathed in the buyer's choice of a matte-gray Phantom, Absolute Zero White, or Nitro Yellow paint job.

The new Mark V Supra gets 382 horsepower out of its turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine helping it go from zero to 60 mph in a quick 3.9 seconds. It maintains the drive dynamics tweaks that were made to the Supra 3.0 chassis for the 2021 model year.

A black and red color scheme dominates the interior of the GR Supra A91-CF Edition, which features Alcantara upholstery, leather, and carbon fiber trim pieces throughout the cabin. Fourteen-way power-adjustable, heated sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and sport pedals are standard.

Buyers also get a standard 8.8-inch infotainment touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, and host of safety technology that includes a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and speed limit information.

Pricing of the model, which is limited to 600 units, will be announced closer to its on-sale date this autumn. A complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association will be included with purchase.
