It's just starting to roll off the production line and already Toyota is making a change to the lineup of its recently redesigned third-generation Tundra. The automaker has created a new, range-topping version of the model, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone.

The 2022 Tundra Capstone sits above the Tundra SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 and TRD Pro in the company's full-size truck trim lineup. This high-end model will compete directly with the Ford F-150 Platinum, Chevrolet Silverado High Country and Ram 1500 Limited Longhorn.

The new Toyota truck will only be offered with the company's high-horsepower i-Force Max hybrid engine, which is currently an option on Limited, Platinum and 1794 grades. Tundra TRD Pro also comes standard as a hybrid.

Toyota has mated the twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.

The new truck will only be offered with a Crew Cab and a 5.5-foot bed.

Toyota has made the Towing Technology Package standard on Tundra Capstone. It allows for a 360-degree view of truck and trailer. When paired with the integrated trailer brake controller, the truck's blind spot monitoring system can recognize the dimensions of the truck and trailer.

It has a towing capacity of 10,340 pounds, short of the truck's maximum of 12,000-pounds in other configurations. Maximum payload for Tundra Capstone is 1,485 pounds.

Buyers can choose from Wind Chill Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Supersonic Red and Blueprint exterior paint colors.

Toyota has elevated the luxe looks of the Tundra 1794 for the Tundra Capstone. It comes with a color-keyed grille surround with a chrome inner mesh, chrome mirror caps, chrome 'Tundra' tailgate inserts, chrome trim accents, and 22-inch chrome rims.

It's well equipped and appointed with standard automatic running boards, a panoramic moonroof, front door acoustic class, a leather-trimmed heated steering wheel and semi-aniline leather-trimmed seats.

Toyota has also given the truck a multilink rear suspension. It's available with an adaptive variable suspension and load-leveling rear heigh control air suspension. When buyers opt for that equipment, they have access to Comfort, Sport S, Sport + and Custom drive modes.

The truck's interior is only available in a black and white color scheme. A dark center console and passenger-side dash are scented by Dark American Walnut open-pore wood.

A Capstone logo is inlayed on the dash. It illuminates when the doors are open.

Toyota has also given the model a full roster of high-tech features including a standard 10-inch head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, 14-inch infotainment touch screen, dual Bluetooth connectivity, a 4G Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple Music and Amazon Music linkage, a JBL Premium Audio System and navigation.

Like other Tundras, the Tundra Capstone comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and parking distance alert with stopping assist. Adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, automatic high means, traffic sign assist, and rear seat reminder are all standard.

Pricing for the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone has yet to be announced. The model is expected to be the most expensive in the truck lineup, meaning its price will likely be around $65,000 plus destination and delivery charges.
