Woman has 34 Bridesmaids at her Wedding: 'It Probably Would Have Been More'

Being a bridesmaid is a lot of responsibility. But if you're sharing the title with dozens of other women, it can get confusing: When singer Casme Carter got married this month on a beach in Florida, she had 34 bridesmaids by her side.

"There are so many women I have met on the journey," Carter told Inside Edition. "Why not let them be part of my life?"

In addition to her six biological sisters, Carter tapped friends she met at school, on the job and while living in Atlanta, New Orleans and elsewhere. In all, 29 of her 34 attendants walked in the ceremony.

"Every woman was handpicked because they have blessed my life at one period and time," she told Essence. "They all knew my desire for love and being loved by the right man."

Casme met her now-husband, Gary Carter, at a Thanksgiving dinner in 2018. He proposed soon after when the couple made pit stop on a road trip.

"I slowed down so he could open the car door like he always does," Casme said. "This time when the door opened, pink rose petals flew out into the wind, a beautiful bouquet of multi-colored roses set in between our seats and a banner marked "MARRY ME CASME.'"

With only three months to prepare for her beachfront nuptials, Carter admits she actually left some women off the list: "To be honest, it probably would have been more than 34. It probably would have been 50 ladies."

After a sunrise ceremony on the beach at Destin, Florida, guests enjoyed crawfish boil, barbecue and beach volleyball.

"I thought, 'let's do the wedding early before the heavens and the Earth, then go get it on, and come back later for the sunset reception."

There were some hiccups along the way, though: Casme's original wedding dress was stolen before the ceremony. And during her bachelorette trip her engagement ring slipped off her finger and into the ocean.

But having her girls by her side—all 34 of them—made everything worth it.

"A lot of them know my journey and know how much of a love bug I am," she said. "I wanted them to share this day with me."

According to a 2017 Wedding Wire study, the typical bridesmaid spends about $1,200 for each ceremony she participates in—including an average of $200 for her bridesmaid's dress, plus additional costs for hair and makeup, travel, and the bachelorette party.
