On Saturday, a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 80 in Northern California collided head-on with another vehicle, killing most of a family except the youngest, according to the Associated Press.

Brittney and Antonio Montano, both 29, their 9-year-old daughter, Marianna, and 5-year-old son, Antonio Jr, were all killed in the crash in Nevada County. The lone survivor of the family, Julian, 4, had been said to be strapped to a car seat.

Julian was airlifted to a hospital in Reno, Nevada. On a GoFundMe account to raise money for burials, the family said while he has substantial injuries, Julian is expected to make a full recovery.

"We're going to take this just one step at a time. We're going to get him into therapy, and we're all going to get through this together," Anthony Gonzalez, Julian's uncle and brother of Brittney Montano, said.

"Everybody's suffering from this," Gonzalez said, KCRA-TV reported."This is a giant loss. Four family members at once is too much."

The post said the family had been headed to the Grand Canyon for a Thanksgiving vacation.

"We will never be the same after this and our family is trying desperately to stay strong for Julian," the family said in the post. "We have to bury four loved ones that were taken from us way too soon, so Julian has a place to visit his mom, dad, and siblings."

Around 5 a.m., a witness called 911, reporting a driver going the wrong way. The crash involved three vehicles and happened minutes later near Eagle Lakes Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash injured the driver of the third vehicle and the wrong-way driver. The third car's driver had moderate injuries while the other continues to be in the hospital, CHP said.

CHP investigators have not identified the wrong-way driver but said he is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, KCRA-TV reported.

Brittney's brother, Anthony Gonzalez, and his wife said they have been by the child's side since the crash.

"It was the worst day of my life," Gonzalez told KTXL-TV Monday, crying.

Gonzalez's wife, Michelle Gonzalez, said the boy has extensive injuries, including a broken leg that required surgery, fractures in his foot and ribs but that he is expected to fully recover. The couple said they plan to adopt their nephew.

"We're going to take care of Julian the best that we can," Michelle Gonzalez told the television station amid tears.
