5 Things to Know About HBO's 'Westworld' Before Season 3 Premiere

HBO's Westworld is scheduled to return March 15, 2020 for its third season. There are 5 things viewers need to know about what's already happened on the critically acclaimed show. Now that HBO has released the new official trailer to their sci-fi western/drama, let's take a look back.

Westworld was inspired by a film of the same name. Interestingly, the 1973 sci-fi thriller was the directorial debut of Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton. In the series, visitors to a futuristic amusement park, known as Westworld, lived out their secret desires and forbidden fantasies through robotic hosts. After the hosts developed their own artificial consciousness, they rebelled against their programming and started attacking the guests. The events that took place at the second season finale expanded the world of the show beyond the park. (SPOILERS Ahead!)

The Door

Westworld's creator, Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), constructed a virtual heaven for the hosts, where they could peacefully upload their consciousness onto new servers. The hosts had to pass through The Door and leave Westworld behind. Along with Maeve (Thandie Newton)'s daughter, Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon) successfully led the Ghost Nation army through the Door. What does this mean for season 3? With most of the hosts gone, how will the amusement park keep running?

Dolores/Charlotte

After Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) murdered Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), he uploaded her consciousness into a new host, Charlotte (Tessa Thompson). It was revealed that Dolores had been pretending to be Charlotte the entire time and managed to escape to the mainland. Will Bernard attempt to stop Dolores from her war against the humans?

The Man in Black

At the end of the sophomore season, William (Ed Harris) took the long way down in the elevator, missing out on the Door. William stumbled into the future, and wandered around the remains of The Forge. Even though he killed her, someone looking very much like his daughter, Emily Grace (Katja Herbers), is standing right in front of him. Because his throat was slit by Dolores, William realizes he should have been dead, a fact which intimated he was a host the entire time.

Maeve

After she developed self-awareness, Maeve went against her own programming and started to develop her own powers; such as mind-control of the other hosts. During the second season finale, Maeve sacrificed herself in order to save her daughter before the Door closed. How is Maeve still alive in the third season trailer?

Teddy

Dolores had grown vengeful and cynical in her bleak attitude towards humanity. She deemed the love of her life, Teddy Flood (James Marsden), as too fragile and weak-minded to be part of her rebellion. Rather than become cold and brutal as Dolores, he killed himself in front of her. Viewers should definitely be afraid of what Dolores has planned in the new season.

Westworld returns to HBO for Season 3 on March 15, 2020 on HBO.
