A shortage in employees at two different air traffic control facilities caused flight delays across the nation.

Flights destined for LaGuardia International Airport in Queens, New York, experienced delays of more than an hour on Friday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Not every flight was impacted, and the FAA advised travelers to consult with their airline for flight status. The FAA cited staff shortages amid the government shutdown as the reason for the delays. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president had been briefed on the situation.

"This is exactly what the [Association of Flight Attendants, or AFA] and other aviation unions have been warning would happen," AFA president Sara Nelson said. "Do we have your attention now, [Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell]? All lawmakers? Open the government and then get back to the business of democracy to discuss whatever you choose. This shutdown must end immediately. Our country's entire economy is on the line."
