Alabama Teen Fatally Shoots Mother in the Face, Police Say

An Alabama teenager accused of shooting his mother in the face, killing her, has been charged with murder.

Austin Walls, 19, was taken into custody after the shooting was reported to the Lee County Sheriff's Office on Monday afternoon.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said it received a report of a shooting at a residence on Lee Road near the Cusseta community in northeast Lee County at around 1.30 p.m. CST.

Deputies arriving at the scene found a 49-year-old woman inside the residence.

The woman had sustained a gunshot wound to the side of her face, the sheriff's office said. She was "unresponsive and showed no sign of life," the sheriff's office added.

The woman's name has not been released by authorities. However, the sheriff's office said investigators had determined the shooting took place following a domestic disturbance between the woman and her son, Austin Walls.

Both were living in the home, the sheriff's office.

Walls' sister, another adult man and three children were also at the home when the shooting occurred, the sheriff's office said. However, no-one else was injured in the incident.

Investigators located a 9mm handgun that they believe was used in the shooting, the sheriff's office said.

Walls was transported to the Lee County Detention Center. He is charged with murder.

No other details about the incident were immediately released.

The homicide investigation is ongoing and additional information will be released when available, the sheriff's office said.

Walls' arrest comes after a Kentucky teacher was arrested last month for allegedly trying to hire someone to kill his mother.

Billy Reynolds, 41, who lived next door to his mother in the city of Olive Hill, allegedly offered $10,000 to an unidentified individual and paid them a retainer fee before his arrest. He was detained after an investigation by Kentucky State Police and the FBI.

Also last month, a young girl was charged with attempted murder after authorities said she stabbed her father twice at their home in Maine.

Officers who were called to the home in Auburn found the man with stab wounds to the chest and stomach. He was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Anyone with information about Monday's shooting is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 334-749-5651 or 334-737-7150. They can also contact the Central Alabama Crimestoppers at 334-215 STOP (7867).
