Man Accidentally Shoots Friend in Neck While Showing Off New Gun

A Massachusetts man who had only recently received his license to carry a gun has been arrested after he unintentionally shot his friend in the neck while showing him his new firearm.

Alec Augustino Braz, 22, from Woburn, Massachusetts, a city located around nine miles from Boston, was arrested on Saturday and charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, improper storage of a firearm, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to a statement by the Woburn Police Department.

The authorities said Braz was showing the gun to his friend in his home located on Mount Pleasant Street at around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, when he accidentally discharged the weapon and shot his 19-year-old guest in the neck.

The unnamed victim was then transported to a local hospital by a friend with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening, according to the police department.

Officers recovered and seized a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol from Braz on Saturday. After interviewing Braz and his friend, the authorities put the 22-year-old under arrest and charged him for the shooting.

Braz is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Woburn District Court. His license to carry a gun has been suspended by police chief Robert F. Rufo Jr.

Accidental shootings are common in the U.S., and statistics from the crime scene specialists Aftermath showed that by October 2020 the country had seen 458 deaths in the year from unintentional shootings. The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence states that around 500 people die from accidental shootings in the U.S. every year.

Aftermath's figures showed that 220 accidental shootings in the country by October 2020 came from children discharging weapons, causing 92 deaths and 135 injuries. The study found that 77 percent of accidental shootings take place in the home.

On June 2, a 9-year-old boy in Mississippi was fatally shot in the head by his 2-year-old sister when the children were left alone in a car with a gun by their mother.

The toddler found the gun under a seat in the vehicle and shot the boy in the head, according to Canton Police Chief Otha Brown who spoke to WJTV following the fatal shooting.

"I never get used to a kid being shot," Brown said. "Never ever. We're not used to no one getting shot, it's just something that you see different every day. The world has changed so much and there's just so much going on."

The boy's mother, who has not been named, faces neglect charges, while further ones could be filed when the case is presented to the Madison County District Attorney.

Newsweek has contacted the Woburn Police Department for comment.
