Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Kamala Harris Demand Justice for Joshua Brown's Murder: 'We Must Get to the Bottom of This'

Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and two 2020 presidential candidates on Sunday demanded authorities investigate and bring justice for the murder of Joshua Brown, who was shot to death over the weekend just days after he was a key witness in the murder trail of a former Dallas police officer.

Brown was shot to death at his apartment complex on Friday, according to a spokesperson for Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot. His killing came 10 days after he testified in the murder trail of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger. Authorities have not yet confirmed a link between Brown's death and his appearance in Guyger's trial.

"Just when we caught a glimpse of justice for Botham Jean, much of it feels stolen back with the murder of Joshua Brown, a key witness in the case," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Sunday. "My heart breaks for his family and for everyone touched by this tragedy. We must get to the bottom of this injustice."

Senator Kamala Harris and former HUD Secretary Julián Castro, both 2020 hopefuls, also mourned Brown's death and called for authorities to investigate the incident.

"Joshua Brown's selflessness and courage brought some justice for his neighbor Botham Jean. We grieve again learning of Joshua's murder," Harris tweeted. "I pray for his family, his community, and all those impacted by this tragedy. We demand answers."

"Joshua Brown bravely stood up to injustice and helped put Amber Guyger behind bars. Three days later, he was murdered by an unknown assailant," Castro added. "We grieve with his family and friends, and demand a transparent investigation the people of Dallas can trust."

At around 10:30 p.m. local time, witnesses alerted Dallas police officers to Brown's body, which was in the parking lot of his apartment complex. After finding multiple gunshot wounds on his body, authorities immediately transported Brown to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to CNN, witnesses told authorities they heard shots fired before then seeing a silver sedan speed out of the parking lot.

Brown "was ambushed at his apartment complex as he got out of his car and (was) shot at close range," attorney Lee Merritt said in a Facebook post on Saturday night. "His mother asked that I do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of his murder. She suspects foul play and it is difficult to rule it out."

Merritt also claimed that a medical examiner confirmed that Brown was "shot in his mouth and his chest." A day later, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins clarified on Twitter that Brown "was not shot in the mouth or head but was shot more than one time."
