Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Encourages Brits to Vote, Sharing Labour Party Campaign Video

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has encouraged Brits to vote in the United Kingdom's general election today, sharing a video by the campaign for left-wing Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The freshman congresswoman from New York told her Twitter followers that "a massive surge of new voters" was the only way to stop the "hoarding of wealth by the few" at the "cost of people's lives."

She also said that Corbyn's campaign video centred on inequality in the United Kingdom "might as well have been produced in the United States."

The video shared by the Labour Party leader on Wednesday, the day before the U.K. general election, featured news coverage of the financial crash and the ensuing impact on taxpayers, child poverty in Britain and cuts to public services.

A poll of polls published by The Financial Times puts the Labour Party in second place with 33 percent of the vote behind the ruling Conservative Party, which is projected to win 43 percent of the vote.

As British voters went to the polls on Thursday afternoon, New York Rep. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: "This video is about the UK, but it might as well have been produced about the United States. The hoarding of wealth by the few is coming at the cost of peoples' lives. The only way we change is with a massive surge of *new* voters at the polls. UK, Vote!"

At the time of writing, her tweet had received more than 4,000 retweets and a further 13,600 likes within just 50 minutes of being published.

Responding to her post, Corbyn tweeted: "As @AOC
says, our system is broken and it's time for real change. #ElectionDay2019"

Newsweek has contacted the Labour Party for further comment. Ocasio-Cortez's office has also been contacted for comment.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has had previous interactions with Corbyn on social media, with the Labour Party leader offering the congresswoman gardening tips when she revealed she would be tending a 4x4 community garden plot.

"For a new plot, first see what is already growing!" Corbyn said. "Then go for some flowers and plants that attract bees and thus improve pollination for everyone - lavender or comfrey good for bees. Best way to be healthy is to get your hands dirty - in the soil!"

Shortly after Ocasio-Cortez was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, she reportedly had a 45-minute phone call with the British socialist in which they spoke about taxes, migration, President Donald Trump's border wall and public services.

British MPs triggered five weeks of campaigning in October when they voted for an early general election following a total legislative impasse in the country's lower parliamentary chamber.

The final version of a major poll by YouGov published Tuesday predicted that the Conservative Party will win the election today, taking 339 seats in the House of Commons and sealing a working majority of 28.

By comparison, the Labour Party is forecast to win 231 seats while the Scottish National Party and Liberal Democrats are predicted to win 41 and 15 seats respectively.
