Son's Wedding Dance With Mom Who Can't Walk Warms Hearts: 'Made Me Cry'

A groom has melted hearts online after sharing the moment he went the extra mile to ensure a first dance with his mother, whose amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) means she is unable to walk.

Zak Poirier's mom was diagnosed with ALS just before he graduated from law school. Marking another big milestone in his life, he made sure his mom's ALS wasn't going to affect his wedding, and especially their mother-son dance.

"Despite not being able to stand on her own, my mom and I shared a dance at my wedding. She inspires me everyday to be humble, kind and selfless," wrote Poirier on Instagram.

In the video, which has been seen over 40,000 times, Poirier, with the help of his two brothers, helped wheel his mother to the middle of the dance floor, before lifting her directly into Poirier's arms. To the tune of "Humble and Kind" by Tim McGraw, the pair slowly moved in time to the music.

"Love you mom," Poirier finished his social media post.

ALS is a rare neurological disease that affects the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement of the body. The progressive disease, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, belongs to the group of motor neuron diseases that are caused by the deterioration of motor neurons. Over time, when dealing with ALS, the brain loses the ability to initiate voluntary movements, including walking, talking and chewing.

Around 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS in the U.S. annually, making around 15 new cases every day, according to the ALS Association. It's estimated that around 20,000 Americans have ALS at any given point.

The moment between Poirier and his mom has been celebrated online, as users rushed to express their joy at the video.

"The way you look at her, talk to her and take her into your arms is one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen," noted one Instagram user.

One viewer described it as their "good cry for the day," adding: "Bless your heart, bless your mom. Your mom raised a good man."

"This has just made me cry. Your mother is blessed to have sons like you all and you are all very, very, very blessed to have an amazing, strong & beautiful mother like her," added another.

Newsweek has contacted Zak Poirier for comment.

Heartwarming moments and gestures from weddings are a well-loved genre online. In 2021, a dad went viral for the selfless moment he asked his daughter's stepfather to join him in walking the bride down the aisle.

The bride was accompanied by her two father figures while meeting her husband-to-be at the end of the aisle. Like with Poirier's video, the gesture was praised en-masse online.
