American Airlines Passenger Opens Plane's Emergency Door, Jumps on to Wing

A passenger on a flight that landed in Miami on Wednesday was taken into custody after opening a door and jumping onto the plane's wing before it reached the terminal.

The passenger, identified as 33-year-old U.S. citizen Christian Segura, opened an emergency door of the aircraft after it arrived at Miami International Airport from Cali, Colombia, at around 7.15 p.m., the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) said.

The plane was pulling into its designated gate when he opened an emergency door and jumped onto the wing. Segura jumped off the wing when officers arrived and he was detained by agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"The aircraft was at the gate, when the subject exited the aircraft through the emergency door, walked onto the wing of the plane, and then jumped down to a restricted area," police said in a news release.

"The subject was met by a security officer and asked for help, claiming that he was in danger. He was then detained by a Customs and Border Protection agent."

Miami-Dade Police and Airport District officers arrived at the scene, assumed the investigation and arrested Segura, the MDPD news release said.

"The subject felt ill and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be cleared medically, where he attempted to escape by physically resisting officers," police said.

Segura is facing several charges, including for violating a designated operational area, battery of a police officer and resisting arrest.

All passengers were able to get off the plane without any issues, a spokesperson for American Airlines said.

"During deplaning in Miami, a customer on American Airlines flight 920 with service from Cali, Colombia (CLO) to MIA exited the aircraft via an emergency exit," the airline said in a statement to Newsweek.

"The customer was immediately detained by law enforcement. We thank our team members and law enforcement for their professionalism and quick action."
