American Found Dead in Egypt Hotel Under Mysterious Circumstances

The body of an American citizen was found dead inside a hotel in Egypt under mysterious circumstances, local media report.

Security services are said to have been the first on the scene to find the unidentified 60-year-old inside a room in the Al-Haram area in Giza, outside Cairo.

Investigators believe the man was last seen accompanied by his girlfriend to his hotel room, Sada Al-Arab reported.

Authorities in Al-Haram originally reported the incident to the Giza Investigations Unit, alerting the authorities that a body was found, according to the publication.

Detectives arrived on the scene and the Public Prosecution Office is currently handling the investigation, according to AlWafd News.

An autopsy of the body is underway to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the death, including whether foul play may have been involved.

Authorities are believed to be speaking with potential witnesses and monitoring security cameras in the area, Elgornal.com reported.

Newsweek has contacted the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs in Egypt and Egypt's Public Prosecution Office.

This comes after the body of a former U.S. Marine was found days after she was reported missing in Russia.

Catherine Serou, 34, who was studying at a university in Russia, had not been heard from since she got into an unidentified car outside her residence in a suburb of Nizhny Novgorod, around 250 miles east of Moscow, on the night of June 16.

In an interview with NPR, her mother, Beccy Serou said she received a message from her daughter that read, "in a car with a stranger. I hope I'm not being abducted."

She added that her daughter was in a hurry to get to a clinic and so may have gotten into a passing car rather than wait for an Uber.

"I think that when she saw that the person wasn't driving to the clinic, but instead was driving into a forest, she panicked," Beccy Serou said. "Her telephone last pinged off a cell tower in that forest."

A criminal investigation into her disappearance was launched and a large-scale search operation was undertaken.

The regional federal investigative committee later confirmed Serou's body was found in a wooded area near Nizhny Novgorod.

Alexander Popov, a man with previous convictions for "serious" and violent crimes, was later arrested on suspicion of murder.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted of murder.
