You need to determine how much solar power you need. Take your hourly energy requirement and multiply it by the number of peak sunlight hours, and then divide it to a solar panel's wattage. To get a better estimate, you need to divide the previous figure into both a low and high wattage solar panel.

2. Your Energy Usage

Your estimated energy usage plays a huge factor in determining the number of solar panels you need. To determine this, grab your electricity bill and check out your average monthly usage, which is in kilowatt-hours (KWH).

At this point, you want to also know your daily and hourly usage. If your bill doesn't show that, divide the monthly figure by 30 or 365 days, then divide the resulting figure again by 24 hours for the hourly usage.

Typically, a small home located in a temperate climate uses 200KWH per month, while larger homes that use huge airconditioners use around 2,000KWH. According to recent data, an average US household uses around 900KWH, or 30KWH daily or 1.25KWH per hour.

Do note that you also need to consider your location and your monthly usage during months when you use up a lot of energy. This is because these two other considerations will also greatly affect how much solar power you will actually need, and if you need to install additional features in case your home is idle or if you need more than the usual during the seasonal months.

3. The Peak Sunlight Hours In Your Location

Solar panels work best when they are placed in direct sunlight. This way, they can harness massive amounts of solar energy for you to fully maximize your solar power system. If any of the solar panels are not getting sunlight, they cannot produce the solar energy you need to power your home. As such, it is important that you determine your peak sunlight hours, particularly at the moment when the sun is directly overhead the location you intend to install the solar panels at.

To determine this, check your home's average hourly energy usage, then multiply by 1,000 converts hourly usage into watts. Then, divide the figure by the number of daily peak sunlight hours, which you can get here. The result will be the amount of wattage your solar panels need to produce every hour. Using our average US household example, a home that uses 900KWH per month that gets five peak sunlight hours daily requires your solar panels to produce 6,250 solar watts every hour.
