Anthony Mackie's Avengers Campus Opening Ceremony Appearance Thrills Fans

Anthony Mackie sparked a wave of excitement among fans on Wednesday night, when he made an appearance at the opening of the new Avengers Campus.

A host of stars descended on the Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California, for the grand unveiling—which was delayed by almost a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

And Mackie, famed for his roles as Falcon and the new Captain America, made his way onto the stage to much fanfare, after he was introduced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige as "the real Captain America."

Toting the same bag he was seen holding in the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier—which contained the Captain America shield—Mackie, 42, said: "I've loved being part of these movies and, now, with Disney Plus, this series.

"It was an emotional moment for me to be in these films, and when Sam Wilson finally became Captain America, it was a moment that's all about the future.

"A moment where kids of all races can look at Captain America and maybe see a little bit of themselves."

He then went on to introduce the cast member who will be portraying the new Captain America on Avengers Campus, making it a ceremonial moment by handing the man the iconic shield.

And the moment wasn't lost on fans, who took to Twitter in droves to express how thrilled they were to see Mackie participate in the livestreamed proceedings.

"I'm so thrilled that we got to see the new Captain America at the #AvengersCampus opening with @AnthonyMackie,' wrote @Jdlazo. "Hope I get to see Cap in person on Saturday."

Also taking to the stage on the night were Paul Rudd, who plays Ant-Man, Iron Man director Jon Favreau, and The Walt Disney Company's CEO Bob Chapek.

Chapek said of the new attraction: "If you've ever wanted to be a superhero, and who among us hasn't, this is the place for you."

Meanwhile, Feige showcased to the audience a full-sized Quinjet, the custom jet used by the Avengers in the movies.

He stated that the Avengers Campus will "never be completed," as it will evolve long with the continual release of blockbuster films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Several Marvel stars were also seen in a video package, including Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), and Paul Bettany (Vision).

The Avengers Campus, which opens to Friday, was officially "activated" after all of the costumed cast members took to the stage, signaling the start of a lavish fireworks display.

Mackie is Marvel's first Black Captain America, and in the final episode of Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, his character Sam Wilson was seen embracing his new role.

In the 2019 smash hit movie Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was seen retiring as Captain America, handing over his iconic shield to a then-reluctant Sam.
