Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho left Anthony Martial out of his squad for the draw with Stoke City because he was unhappy with the striker's performance against Liverpool, according to reports.

The Sun claims Mourinho "lost patience" with Martial, 21, when the France international failed to dominate Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on January 15. He subsequently missed United's game against Stoke Saturday at the bet365 Stadium.

Martial, who signed from AS Monaco in the summer of 2015 in a deal that may eventually reach £58 million ($72.2 million), was United's top scorer in his first season with 15 goals in all competitions.

But he has been in and out of Mourinho's starting line-up this season, amid reports of a loan move to another English Premier League team or back to France.

Mourinho, whose team looks to seal a place in the EFL Cup final at Wembley when it plays Hull City in the semi-final second leg at KCOM Stadium Thursday, would only say Martial was "not selected" when asked why the forward was absent against Stoke.
