Apple’s iPhone 17 launch fails to impress: ‘This was not too exciting’

Apple's latest product showcase may have delivered faster, lighter, and more efficient devices—but it didn't move the market. In an exclusive comment to Newsweek, Melissa Otto, CFA and Head of Research at Visible Alpha, said the event "was not too exciting," noting that Apple stock fell 1.5% by the close.

"The theme was performance and refinement, but the market feels underwhelmed," Otto said. The event opened with updates to AirPods and Apple Watch, part of a wearables segment projected to grow in the low single digits and generate a 33% gross margin—lower than the iPhone's 40%.

Otto pointed to the iPhone Air's ultra-thin design and the 17-series camera upgrades as incremental rather than transformative. "The Pro is clearly aimed at content creators, but outside of translation and gaming, AI wasn't emphasized. It felt like an iteration," she added.

According to Visible Alpha consensus, Apple is expected to sell 233 million iPhones this fiscal year, including 27 million 17-series units. That number is forecast to rise to 160 million 17-series units in FY 2026, generating $218 billion in revenue. Promotional trade-ins—up to $1,100 for eligible models—may help drive early adoption.

Still, Otto cautioned that the upgrade cycle may face headwinds. "The iPhone is starting to feel over-engineered. I wonder if my mom cares about any of the new enhancements. The total addressable market could shrink this cycle."

Available for pre-order starting today, the Series 11 starts at $399 and ships September 19. Apple set to unveil iPhone 17 amid trade war and tariff pressures

Apple is set to launch its iPhone 17 lineup today, marking the first major product release since President Donald Trump returned to office and reignited trade tensions with China. The new devices arrive under the shadow of a 25% import duty, fueling speculation of Apple's first across-the-board price hike in five years.

Despite calls from the Trump administration to shift iPhone production to the U.S., Apple continues to rely on manufacturing hubs in China and India. CEO Tim Cook has pledged $600 billion in U.S. investments and offered diplomatic gestures—including a gold-based statue—to ease tensions, but tariffs remain in place.

The iPhone 17 series may include a new ultra-thin "iPhone Air" model, alongside modest upgrades in camera performance, battery life, and AI integration. However, key features like a more intelligent Siri have been delayed until 2026, tempering expectations for this year's launch.

Also anticipated are updates to the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, which could include satellite messaging and 5G support. AirPods Pro 3 may debut with health tracking features and real-time translation, though Apple has yet to confirm.

The devices will run iOS 26, introducing a "Liquid Glass" UI, revamped Messages and Photos apps, and new customization tools. While foldable iPhones and new MacBooks are not expected today, Apple may tease future releases later in the year.

While Apple typically keeps product launches under wraps, it's not unusual for retailers to receive advance notice or inventory ahead of announcements. The leak adds weight to rumors that AirPods Pro 3 will be available immediately following today's keynote.

AirPods Max 2 likely delayed until 2025 or later, true upgrade still unconfirmed

Apple's premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, have yet to receive a full second-generation update despite persistent rumors. The most recent refresh—adding USB-C charging and new color options—was not a true successor, with Apple still listing the product as AirPods Max.

Industry sources suggest that a genuine AirPods Max 2 may not arrive until mid-2025 or even 2027. Expected upgrades include a new H2 chip, improved noise cancellation, and support for lossless audio, though Apple has yet to confirm any details.

Apple TV 4K 2025 may feature camera, faster chip, and Dolby Vision 2 support

The Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) remains a top-tier choice for premium streaming, consistently outperforming rivals like Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Google TV in audio and video quality. However, with the current model aging, speculation is mounting about a possible refresh.

While Apple hasn't confirmed a new device, rumors suggest the next Apple TV 4K could feature an integrated camera for FaceTime and smart home functions, a next-gen A18 chip for faster performance, and upgraded Wi-Fi—possibly Wi-Fi 6E or 7. Industry watchers also anticipate support for Dolby Vision 2, which introduces AI-powered "Content Intelligence" for optimized picture settings.

Despite the lack of concrete details, expectations are high that Apple will unveil the new streaming box before year's end. Until then, the 3rd Gen model remains the benchmark for home theater excellence.

While these additions offer practical enhancements, Apple appears poised to spotlight hardware upgrades—especially the iPhone 17 lineup—at its September 9 event.

Despite early excitement, a major Siri overhaul is unlikely to arrive this cycle. Reports suggest Apple's generative AI-powered assistant remains in development, with a full rollout expected no earlier than 2026. For now, Apple Intelligence will focus on incremental improvements across apps, including smarter messaging, photo organization, and real-time translation.

As Apple prepares to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup, pricing speculation remains divided. Some analysts expect the standard iPhone 17 to maintain its predecessor's $799 starting price, while the Pro models may begin at $999.

However, recent reports suggest a potential $100 increase for the iPhone 17 Pro, driven by expanded base storage and advanced hardware upgrades. If accurate, this would mark the first price hike for Apple's Pro-tier phones in eight years.

The rumored iPhone 17 Air, replacing the Plus model, could debut at $899–$949, offering a slimmer design and mid-tier specs. Apple has yet to confirm pricing, but all eyes are on today's "Awe Dropping" event for final details.

Everything we know about Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup

Apple's iPhone 17 series, set to debut at today's "Awe Dropping" event, marks one of the most significant design shifts since the iPhone X. The lineup will include four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a new rumored ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. Notably, Apple is discontinuing the "Plus" variant due to lackluster demand.

The rumored iPhone 17 Air is expected to feature a sleek 6.6-inch display and a chassis as thin as 5.5mm, positioning it as a mid-tier option between the base and Pro models. All four devices will support ProMotion with 120Hz refresh rates, enabled by LTPO OLED panels, bringing smoother visuals to the entire lineup.

Design changes include a horizontal camera bar on the Air and Pro models, while the Pro Max may introduce triple 48MP lenses and 8K video recording. The Air is expected to feature a single 48MP rear camera and be among the first to utilize Apple's in-house Wi-Fi 7 and 5G modem chips.

Internally, the Pro models are expected to run on the A19 Pro chip with vapor chamber cooling, while the Air and standard iPhone 17 will use the standard A19. RAM upgrades push the Air and Pro models to 12GB, with the base model retaining 8GB.

Color options may include black, silver, gold, and light blue, and Apple is rumored to introduce new "TechWoven" cases with improved durability. Pricing is projected to start at $799 for the iPhone 17, with the Air ranging from $899 to $949.

How to watch Apple’s annual event

Apple's highly anticipated fall product launch kicks off today at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT from Apple Park in Cupertino, California. The keynote, branded as the "Awe Dropping" event, is expected to showcase the iPhone 17 series, including a rumored ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, alongside updates to the Apple Watch and AirPods Pro.

The event invite, sent out August 26, features a dynamic Apple logo that shifts from blue to orange when interacted with online—possibly hinting at the new Liquid Glass design language in iOS 26. The operating system is slated to bring visual enhancements and new features like group chat polls and improved spam detection.

Speculation around the iPhone 17 lineup suggests notable upgrades: the Air model may prioritize sleek design over battery capacity, while the Pro and Pro Max versions could introduce scratch-resistant displays, 8x telephoto lenses, and larger batteries. All models are expected to run on Apple's in-house C1 5G modem and Wi-Fi chips.

Also on deck: the Apple Watch Series 11, likely featuring minor refinements, and the AirPods Pro 3, which may include a slimmer case and enhanced audio capabilities. While a major Siri overhaul is unlikely to debut today, Apple may preview other AI-driven features under its Apple Intelligence umbrella.
