How To Watch the Apple Music Awards Live Stream With Performance by Winner Billie Eilish

Apple has announced the first-ever Apple Music Awards, honoring the most popular musical endeavors of 2019 as selected by the company's "global editorial team of experts and tastemakers," and based on nearly a year's worth of collected streaming data.

On Monday, the music steaming giant issued a statement announcing the awards, a worldwide event which the company called a "celebration of the best and boldest musicians of 2019 and the enormous impact they have had on global culture this year." The announcement came less than two weeks after rival streaming service Spotify announced its own awards show, scheduled for March 2020.

The inaugural event will be held on Wednesday, December 4, at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. The company announced a live stream of the show featuring a headlining performance by Grammy-nominated artist Billie Eilish would be available on the Apple website. Viewers are invited to tune in beginning at 6:30 p.m. PST.

The Apple Music Awards are set to honor artists across five distinct categories:

  • Global Artist of the Year
  • Breakthrough Artist of the Year
  • Song of the Year
  • Album of the Year
  • Songwriter of the Year

"The Apple Music Awards are designed to recognize the passion, energy and creativity of the world's favorite artists," according to Oliver Schusser, the vice president of Apple Music and International Content. "The musically diverse group of inaugural winners have sparked deep social conversation, influenced culture and inspired our customers around the world. We couldn't be more excited to celebrate them."

Eilish was among the winners, which were also announced Monday. In a sweeping victory, clinched three out of the five prizes. The streaming giant announced Monday that the 17-year-old hit-maker scored wins for "global artist of the year," "album of the year" and "songwriter of the year."

Her debut work, When We Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? was named Apple's most streamed album of 2019. It was co-written and produced with her brother FINNEAS, who will share the "songwriter of the year" title with her.

Another winner announced Monday included "Truth Hurts" artist Lizzo, who secured Apple's "breakthrough artist of the year" award. The singer-songwriter was previously revealed to be the most nominated artist of the 2020 GRAMMY awards, to be hosted by Alicia Keys on January 26. She is one of five black women who have nabbed the top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart this decade, placing her in the company of fellow artists Beyoncé, Rihanna, Janelle Monae and Cardi B.

"It doesn't get much bigger than Cuz I Love You and its chin-up single 'Truth Hurts,' which dared to ask what pop stars should look and sound like—and whether they should play flute while twerking. (They should.)," Apple wrote of its pick for the "breakthrough artist" award. "Lizzo's joyful, bawdy message of self-love is the perfect soundtrack—or antidote—to 2019."

Rounding out the list of winners of the 2019 Apple Music Awards was "overnight superstar" Lil Nas X, who received accolades for "Old Town Road." The single—a collaboration with country music idol Billy Ray Cyrus broke the internet with a viral video in late May—won in Apple's "song of the year" category.

"I went into the realm of a loner cowboy, needing to run away from everything," the rapper told Apple Music. "But I also wanted to put it with what was on the rise, which is the whole meme culture—plus actually making it a listenable, catchy song."
