Are Banks Open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? Bank of America, Chase Hours

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, or MLK Day, is today, January 18. As a federal holiday, many federal services will be closed, so you may be wondering—are banks open on MLK Day?

The Federal Reserve observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday and banks tend to follow the Fed's holiday schedule. Therefore, most banks and credit unions, like Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo, will be closed on MLK Day.

However, many banking services will still be available, such as online and mobile banking, and bank customers will still be able to access their money via ATMs.

You will likely only be impacted by the bank closures on Martin Luther King Jr. Day if you require the services of a bank teller today, or if you are dealing with ongoing banking services, which may be delayed due to the holiday. For any services that require a bank teller, you will need to wait until the day after MLK Day.

Following Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Federal Reserve will observe Presidents' Day on February 15, Memorial Day on May 31, and Independence Day on July 5—because July 4 falls on a Sunday this year.

The Federal Reserve will also observe Labor Day on September 6, Columbus Day on October 11, and Veterans Day on November 11. Additionally, major holidays like Thanksgiving Day on November 25 and Christmas Day will also be observed, but due to December 25 falling on a Saturday this year, December 24 will be a federal holiday.

The Fed's website explains that when holidays fall on a Saturday, federal banks will generally be open on the Friday before, though the Board of Governors will be closed. When holidays fall on a Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices will be closed on the following Monday.

Other than banking services, other federal services that will be closed or operating with a modified service on MLK Day includes postal services.

Post offices will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the United States Postal Service (USPS) will not be picking up or delivering mail. However, private mailing companies like as UPS and FedEx, will still deliver mail on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
