The big changes for today's ARK update are, of course, the structural additions and the complete kibble overhaul. Starting first with the structures, there's a lot here that simplifies the building process by removing fan-made workarounds for age-old problems. Bulk storage means having to build fewer small storage containers, while flexible pipes and cables let players focus less on land layouts and more on individual creativity. Prior to now, survivors had to support their bases by layering doors and walls on top of each other. With these new fortification options, there should be far less of that happening.

Just as the base building process has been streamlined, the same goes for the kibble mechanic as well. Instead of deciphering a web of 50 different possible kibble options, the new system breaks everything down into the six feed categories that debuted in Extinction. Most ARK players made sense of the kibble system by consulting wikis and guides, but this new framework makes it slightly more possible to comprehend without any additional help at all. Even now there are still plenty of hardcore survival elements in ARK. Cutting back the kibble framework keeps those features in tact while making the experience slightly more approachable. All in all, the Homestead Update trims back a few of ARK's more archaic systems in favor of something more reasonable.

ARK: Survival Evolved is available now on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch.
