Arrowverse Crossover 2018: Lois Lane, Mrs. Freeze Join Cast

The annual Arrowverse crossover event—where casts of The Flash, Supergirl and Arrow join forces—finally found its Lois Lane. Grimm star Elizabeth Tulloch will play the driven Daily Planet reporter (who happens to be Superman’s better half.) Tyler Hoechlin from Supergirl will also reprise his role as Clark Kent, a.k.a. the Man of Steel.

Also joining the cast is Cassandra Jean Amell, who will play Nora Fries, the wife of DC Comics villain Mr. Freeze. Amell will share the spotlight with her husband, Stephen Amell, who stars as Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow. TV Line reports Mr. Freeze will not appear in the crossover.

Victor Fries, a.k.a. Mr. Freeze, is a Batman adversary, known as a member of his “rogues gallery.” Not to be confused with Captain Cold, a regular villain in The Flash TV series. In the comic books Nora Fries (a.k.a. Lazara), is a major part of Mr. Freeze's origin story, but she also has an interesting story of her own.

Nora was terminally ill, and Victor gained his powers from a lab accident meant to cure her. The tragedy significantly lowered his body temperature, which is the purpose for his stabilizing cryogenic suit and inspiration for his signature freeze gun. Nora survived the accident, but went into an ice-like state inside the lab’s chamber. Her supervillain origins vary, but in one arc Mr. Freeze made a deal with Nyssa al Ghul to ressurect her using the Lazarus Pit. That’s when Nora takes up the name Lazara, a villain who can summon fire and manipulate the dead.

Without a characer description, it's unclear how closely the Arrowverse will adapt Nora's origins. But there are a few interesting connections already in place on Arrow. Nyssa al Ghul is a longstanding member of the cast, played by Katrina Law. The Lazarus Pit has also been used on many occasions in the series. Until the finale, the last remaining Lazarus Pit was thought to be destroyed. However, the episode revealed there are still three more Lazarus Pits across the world. The finale implied Nyssa, Thea and Roy would head on a mission to find and destroy the rest.

Mr. Freeze has appeared on Fox’s ongoing Gotham, the 1960’s live-action Batman series, 1997’s Batman & Robin (by Arnold Schwarzenegger), as well as countless TV shows in the DC animated universe, including Batman: The Animated Series. Nora Fries has also appeared on Gotham, Batman & Robin, as well as Batman: The Animated Series.

It's no coincidence a Batman villain has been added to the crossover event cast. Beloved DC Comics character Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman, will also make her debut in this year’s crossover in her hometown of Gotham City. She’ll be portrayed by Ruby Rose, who will also star in the spinoff series Batwoman if the pilot is successful. Since Batman has been confirmed to exist on both Earth-1 (The Flash, Arrow) and Earth-38 (Supergirl), it's still unclear where the crossover event will take place.

The Flash returns Tuesday, Oct. 9, immediately followed by Black Lightning at 9 p.m. Supergirl returns on a new night: Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. Arrow takes the Monday slot, premiering Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs the following week on Monday, Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. The Arrowverse crossover takes place Dec. 9-11 on The CW.
