'Assassin's Creed Odyssey' Abilities Guide: Tips For Picking Skill Order

There are a number of different abilities in Assassin's Creed Odyssey and players have the opportunity to add a new ability, or upgrade an existing one, after reaching every new level. This can be a bit overwhelming at first, and not all abilities are worth picking, or at least not early on. Here are some tips for picking the most useful in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Unfortunately, players don't have immediate access to all abilities right away. Many are unlocked once players upgrade their Spear of Leonidas. Also, any ability involving the bow isn't very helpful, since bows are incredibly underpowered and mostly useless in combat.

The first ability to pick up is Spartan Kick. This is both a powerful attack and counter, since it can cancel out an enemy's unblockable attack. Additionally, Spartan Kick is useful for sending enemies flying off cliffs, and seeing as how fall damage seems cranked to the max in Odyssey, it's a useful tactic for defeating stronger enemies.

From there, the Second Wind ability is crucial and should be your next pick. It's the only way you can gain back significant health during combat without running away and hiding. This becomes an absolute necessity when facing tougher enemies. Another tip: upgrade this any time you have the opportunity.

Upgrading your Shadow Assassin ability is also important if you want to use stealth tactics. If you're wondering why you can't get one-hit assassinations anymore, it's because you need to upgrade this ability. Critical Assassination is also a must for stealth play, as it makes it much easier to assassinate powerful enemies.

Once your spear is upgraded (by killing Cultists and returning to the Ancient Forge. If you haven't gotten there yet, you'll figure it out), many more abilities are unlocked, along with the option to upgrade previously unlocked abilities. The Ring of Chaos area of effect attack becomes a must. This is a great way to quickly deal with large swarms of enemies. Getting the Ring of Chaos attack upgraded to level 3 really helps when you get surrounded by wolves (so many wolves.)

You'll have the ability to add modifiers to your weapons to deal either poison or fire damage, so pick one and upgrade it to the max level. I went with fire damage (called Flaming Attacks), which I think is more helpful overall, but you do you. Both poison and fire damage abilities also have "Mastery" abilities, so make sure you level up both your weapon modifier ability and mastery.

Eventually, you'll unlock a second ability wheel, which you can assign four more abilities. To access the second wheel, you'll need to hold down L1/LB and press down on the d-pad. This swaps between the two ability wheels. I found myself forgetting about the second wheel, so make sure you put your most used abilities on the main one.

Other useful skills are the passive ones. These aren't attacks, but give your stats a boost in specific areas. The Weapons Master and Gear Master skills are the two I'd focus on most, then consider picking up an upgrade or two in Stealth Master once it becomes available.
