Australian Open 2022 Favorites, Odds After Novak Djokovic Deported

The Australian Open is almost upon us and the focus will soon turn to matters on the court, after the saga surrounding Novak Djokovic's visa.

The build up to the first grand slam of the year has been overshadowed by the Serbian player's unsuccessful attempt to play in the tournament following the cancelation of his visa.

The outright favorite with Betfair heading into the tournament is Daniil Medvedev, who currently leads the way with odds of 7/5.

He is at the very top of a group of younger players coming through to replace the once dominant trio of Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. This could be seen as a real opportunity for Medvedev to assert himself as a long-term competitor for Grand Slams after his U.S. Open win last year.

Alexander Zverev is the second favorite for the Australian Open at 13/5, ahead of Nadal at (8/1).

Elsewhere, British tennis legend Andy Murray, no longer competing for Grand Slams and still working his way back from his career-threatening injuries, is unlikely to reach the latter stages but can be backed at 80/1, while compatriot Cameron Norrie is also 80/1.

Novak Djokovic loses 2020 Olympics match
Novak Djokovic of Team Serbia wipes away sweat during his Men's Singles Semifinal match against Alexander Zverev of Team Germany on day seven of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The Serbian tennis star misses the Australian Open after his visa was canceled.

In the women's draw, Emma Raducanu is an outsider at 40/1 to win a second successive Grand Slam and once again confound expectations.

The Brit faces a tough test in the first round against Sloane Stephens, who is the 4/5 favorite to beat the teenager.

A second successive Grand Slam title triumph for Raducanu is not predicted, then, after a meteoric rise to the top in New York last year. Instead, the odds suggest Ashleigh Barty (11/4) and Naomi Osaka (6/1) are the frontrunners to win in Melbourne.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: "Daniil Medvedev leads the way with odds of 7/5 to go all the way in Melbourne. Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu is not fancied to progress to the second round with Sloane Stephens the 4/5 favorite to beat the British star, who is Evens to win the opening tie and 25/1 to win the tournament."
