Christal Hayes started at Newsweek in 2017, leaving the Sunshine State for New York City. She was the first reporter for the Orlando Sentinel at three of Orlando's biggest stories in decades. Christal reported on the killing of singer Christina Grimmie, the Pulse nightclub shooting and an alligator that killed a toddler at Disney World. She also had a huge role in the Sentinel's long-term planning and coverage of the Pulse shooting, which led to the newspaper winning a number of awards, including a National Headliner Award, and being named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. She spent her last days at the Sentinel covering hurricanes and is looking forward to the snow
