Netflix Original Series 'The Dragon Prince' Takes Talent From 'Avatar' and 'Uncharted'

Avatar: The Last Airbender head writer Aaron Ehasz and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception director Justin Richmond teamed up to create new series The Dragon Prince, Netflix announced Wednesday.

Netflix describes The Dragon Prince as "a new animated series about two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands." The accompanying image, with the three main characters facing off against a dragon, evokes a combination of Western and Eastern animation familiar to Avatar and The Legend of Korra fans.

The Dragon Prince is the first show from Wonderstorm, a multimedia studio created by Richmond and Ehasz which plans an accompanying video game. "Writers and artists are literally working alongside designers and engineers, and we're all engaged with these characters and this world," Ehasz told Polygon in a 2017 interview. "It's a really delightful situation. A lot of contributions are coming from corners you don't expect."

Both the Avatar and Uncharted series combine sprawling, heart-pumping adventures with fantastic, witty characters, a quality that seems likely for The Dragon Prince, particularly since the new Netflix series is executive produced by Giancarlo Volpe, who directed 19 episodes of The Last Airbender.

More of The Dragon Prince will be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, with the series premiering on Netflix in September.
