‘Avengers 4’: Kevin Feige Explains Why Quantum Realm Is Important

An Avengers 4 trailer is coming soon, but Kevin Feige just gave Marvel fans the perfect reason to revisit the Ant-Man films. Apparently, the Quantum Realm is even more important than we already thought.

In a new book, Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years, the Marvel Studios head pretty much confirmed the Quantum Real is an integral element in upcoming Marvel films. Here’s the full quote:

At the end of Ant-Man we followed Scott Lang into the Quantum Realm for the first time. We were beginning to peel back the onion that would later be completely peeled back in Doctor Strange as we go into the multiverse. So that was our little test into that. But now the Quantum Realm is a whole other territory that we can play with to tell our stories. This Quantum Realm is much larger than we ever imagined, and there are all sorts of adventures to be had at that level, which perhaps we will explore in another film.

The Quantum Realm (from the little info we know so far) is a microverse, an energy source, and an invisible metaphysical pathway through the multiverse itself. Anyone within the Quantum Realm, perhaps Ant-Man, might be able to travel through space and time, or glimpse into alternate realities. The possibilities are essentially endless, especially since there’s really only been two instances where the Quantum Realm has appeared in the MCU so far.

Of course, the most recent is the post-credits scene in the Ant-Man sequel. Thanos snaps away The Wasp, and Ant-Man gets stuck in the Quantum Realm with no way out. The timing of the snap and Ant-Man’s Quantum adventure cannot be a coincidence. But there were also a few hints in Doctor Strange . When the Ancient One was talking about dimensions of the universe, she calls some“ benevolent and life-giving”as Strange passes through, which seems to reference the Quantum Realm (although she may call it something different.)

That word choice, “life giving” is peculiar. It hints at a concept mentioned in Thor: the Dark World. Jane Foster, when being treated by an Asgardian doctor because her body was host to the Aether (the Reality Stone), realizes the function of a Soul Forge (the device he’s using to help her) is the same as that of a quantum field generator.

The Soul Forge generates quantum fields to highlight the patient's physiology. A similiar process happens in Ant-Man 2 when Janet Van Dyne heals Ghost by transferring molecular energy she gained in the Quantum Realm to rearrange the cells in Ghost’s body. So how does this relate to Avengers 4?

Well, in Infinity War the soul stone introduced the Soulworld, a mysterious pocket dimension of the multiverse, a pocket dimension not all unlike the Quantum Realm itself. This has lead many Marvel fans to theorize that the people Thanos snapped away aren’t dead, their molecular energy was just transferred to somewhere else in the multiverse … perhaps even somewhere within the Quantum Realm, or at somewhere accessible to the Quantum Realm.

How do you think the Quantum Realm relates to Avengers 4? Simple time travel, or is there more to it? Perhaps that’s where the lost souls of the dead Avengers are stored? Sound off in the comments. Avengers 4 arrive May 3, 2019.
