‘Avengers: Endgame’ Theory: Is Time Travel Going to Be a Plot Device?

The release of the new Avengers: Endgame trailer has fans speculating about how the heroes will take out Thanos after what he did during Infinity War (spoilers: killed a lot of people.) But what if they simply reverse it?

An Endgame theory that’s been passed around since the first trailer back in December is that the Avengers will use time travel to defeat Thanos.

The second trailer seems to give more credence to this time travel theory, and here’s how.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME QUANTUM REALM THEORY

In the end credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott Lang travels into the Quantum Realm to gather more Quantum Energy while Hope, Scott and Janet man the controls to bring him back. However, after the Thanos snap eliminates them Scott is left alone in the Quantum Realm.

The first Endgame trailer reveals that Scott somehow gets out of the Quantum Realm, and this has led to rumors that this dimension will play a big part in the upcoming film. Perhaps the Quantum Realm protected Scott from the Infinity Gauntlet, but many believe that it’ll be used to go back in time, since the rules of time and space are believed to be irrelevant in this dimension.

There’s a popular theory that the villainous Kronos is actually the big bad of the film and he’ll help the Avengers, but this trailer doesn’t give us any insight on that. It does, however, show the Avengers in new outfits that look like space suits. But what if the Avengers aren’t heading into space, but are going through the Quantum Realm?

The suits do have a resemblance to the suit that Ghost wore in Ant-Man and the Wasp that kept her body stable in the Quantum Realm.

PEGGY CARTER

A common thread in the second Avengers: Endgame trailer was showing the past/origins of Tony Stark, Steve Rogers and Thor. Cap’s part had a line of dialogue from Peggy Carter, one of the founding members of SHIELD and Steve’s love interest.

The line “The world has changed. None of us can go back. All we can do is our best, and sometimes the best that we can do is to start over.” is from Captain America: Winter Soldier when Steve visits a dying Peggy in the hospital.

Many are taking this line as a sign of things to come, perhaps a cameo from Carter. The bit about starting over also has fans believing this to mean to go back in time and do the events of Infinity War over again.

This, admittedly, is a stretch but while Tony and Thor spoke over their montages it is interesting that Peggy was the one to speak for Steve.

Avengers: Endgame is set to release in theaters April 26.
