Bargains and Busts: 2019 NFL Preseason Super Bowl Odds Did Not Mirror Late-Season Standings

Betting odds for futures can vary so much that a $200 wager on the best sure-shot could pay out as much as a $20 bet on the long shot. When it comes to preseason odds for NFL teams winning the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots have been among the favorites for nearly the last two decades.

Nothing changed in 2019 after the Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl in February. The Patriots were 7-to-1 preseason favorites to win this year's Super Bowl, and it was probably a pretty safe bet as the Patriots this weekend won their 11th-consecutive AFC East title—and 17th in the last 18 years—and they could wrap up the No. 2 seed in the AFC with a win over the Miami Dolphins this Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins, on the other hand, were were listed at 170-to-1 to win the Super Bowl, according to FanDuel Sportsbook back in August. The oddsmakers weren't far off as the Dolphins are just 4-11 and will likely finish among the fifth-worst teams in the league this year.

The current leaders in the AFC and NFC—the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, respectively—were not even among the top 10 teams favored to win.

The Ravens were tied with the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks at 15th, each with 32-to-1 odds of winning the Super Bowl. That means a $100 wager on the Ravens would net a preseason bettor $3,200 plus their $100 wager should the Ravens win Super Bowl LIV in Miami on Feb. 2. The Seahawks could overtake the 49ers in the NFC West as they face each other this Sunday.

The 49ers are 18th on the list at 36-to-1 odds.

There are teams already eliminated from playoff contention that had better preseason odds than the Ravens and 49ers, including the Los Angeles Rams (11/1), Los Angeles Chargers (15/1), Cleveland Browns (15/1), Chicago Bears (19/1) and Jacksonville Jaguars (31/1).

The Ravens are the current favorite to win the Super Bowl, followed by the 49ers and New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks.

Here are the FanDuel preseason odds:

*New England Patriots 7/1
*Kansas City Chiefs 8/1
