'Batwoman': Meet Ruby Rose's Replacement Javicia Leslie

Nearly two months after Ruby Rose announced she was leaving Batwoman, The CW has announced that God Friended Me star Javicia Leslie will be replacing her in the lead role. However, she will not be playing Kate Kane but a new character who will become Batwoman in Season 2 of the show named Ryan Wilder.

As show producers pledged when they started casting Rose's replacement, they have hired someone from the LGBTQ+ community to play the lesbian superhero. In a statement, Leslie said: "I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show, which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community."

Leslie's character Ryan Wilder is described as: "Likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She's also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her.

"With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."

Leslie comes to Batwoman straight off of her role as another lesbian. She played Ali Finer in God Friended Me, which got canceled by CBS earlier on in the TV season. Prior to that, she was the lead of Always a Bridesmaid, the 2019 romantic comedy movie, and a star of the BET series The Family Business. She also had a recurring role in two episodes of CBS' MacGyver reboot.

According to her website, Leslie was born in Germany to military parents but raised in Maryland.

Writing on Instagram, Rose said of her replacement: "OMG!! This is amazing!! I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I want to congratulate Javicia Leslie on taking over the bat cape. You are walking into an amazing cast and crew. I can't wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing!!"

Leslie, meanwhile, wrote on her own Instagram: "For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day... it's possible!"

Though Leslie has now been confirmed to be joining Batwoman, fans have a while to wait before they meet Ryan Wilder. The CW has delayed Season 2 until January 2021, when the show will air in its usual Sunday night slot.
