The crossover will introduce Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman, before she gets her own Arrowverse spinoff show (if the pilot goes to series, Batwoman will premiere next fall). DC describes Kate Kane as a woman "armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind. She soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet—in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope."

A cousin to Bruce Wayne, Kate's childhood was tragic in the comic books as well. After her mother and sister were taken hostage and killed, she was raised by her father, a military colonel. She went to West Point, and was a good student until her sexuality was outed forcing her to leave the school rather than hide her true self. Inspired by Batman in Gotham, she fights for justice under the moniker Batwoman.

Kate Kane's Batwoman has appeared in Detective Comics and her own ongoing series. This is her first live-action appearance, though fans may recognize the character from the animated movie Batman: Bad Blood and in DC video games like DC Universe Online and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.

This is a strong step toward greater LGBTQ representation on CW's superhero TV shows. While there are many other heroes who identify as lesbian, bisexual and gay, Batwoman will be the first lesbian superhero played by a lesbian actor to headline her own superhero show. And Batwoman isn't the only exciting casting this year. Nicole Maines will play Dreamer, a trans superhero, in Supergirl Season 4.
